Noise Cancelling
Noise-cancelling technology - sometimes abbreviated to ANC - is an extremely clever, useful feature of many modern headphone and earphone designs. Rather than simply blocking out background noise by covering your ears (like fully-enclosed, over-ear, and closed-back headphones do), instead so-called Active Noise Cancellation circuits "listen" to your surroundings using tiny external microphones, then deliver the exact opposite - inverted - audio signal to your ears, effectively cancelling-out any ambient noise.
This approach means that you can switch noise-cancellation on or off, exactly as needed. Plus, the external microphones allow you to listen to your surroundings without removing your headphones or earphones. Very useful if you need to quickly listen, then dive back into your music a moment later.
